The virtual campus of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) in Second Life was opened on 25 September 2009 by Professor Timothy W. Tong, PolyU President, and Professor Suleyman Demokan, PolyU Vice President (Academic Development). PolyU has taken the lead in Hong Kong to develop an entire virtual campus in virtual world Second Life. The campus contains a range of facilities such as a library, a teaching hotel, an exhibition centre, a medical centre and other areas for educational use.

This paper describes how Second Life has been used for teaching and learning in a hospitality and tourism School in Hong Kong. It discusses some of the opportunities, challenges and problems of using this virtual environment, and analyzes data collected from students and teachers who used Second Life for learning and teaching in four diverse courses.
